THE WHAT? Following multiple reports of illness caused by infected tattoo inks and the discovery of microbial contamination during subsequent testing, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a draft guidance to help manufacturers and distributors prevent microbial contamination in tattoo inks.
THE DETAILS The draft recommendations may include testing of ink and ink components; ensuring contamination does not occur during the manufacturing process and that validated sterilization methods are used, among others.
THE WHY? FDA Chief Scientist Namandjé Bumpus, explains, “With about 30 percent of people living in the U.S. having a tattoo, it’s imperative that the FDA take all necessary steps to help ensure that tattoo inks are free of contamination. Pathogens or other harmful substances in these inks can cause infections and serious injuries. The FDA is issuing this draft guidance to help tattoo ink manufacturers and distributors recognize situations in which tattoo ink may become contaminated with microorganisms and take steps to protect public health.”
