THE DETAILS The national settlement will be paid over the course of 13 years up to a present value of US$10.3 billion and cover public water systems across the US and, 3M is at pains to point out, it is not an admission of liability. The settlement is subject to judicial approval. The settlement is designed to provide funding for public water suppliers across the country for PFAS treatment technologies.

THE WHY? 3M CEO, Mike Roman, commented, “This is an important step forward for 3M, which builds on our actions that include our announced exit of PFOA and PFOS manufacturing more than 20 years ago, our more recent investments in state-of-the-art water filtration technology in our chemical manufacturing operations, and our announcement that we will exit all PFAS manufacturing by the end of 2025.”
