THE WHAT? L’Oréal is among a number of key beauty industry players who pledged to reduce the cosmetics industry’s supply-chain emissions at China’s first carbon-neutrality expo last week, according to a report published by the South China Morning Post.
THE DETAILS Other firms to take the pledge include hyaluronic acid producer Bloomage Biotechnology and Alibaba-owned logistics firm, Cainiao. L’Oréal and Alibaba announced a collaboration to create circular solutions earlier this month.
THE WHY? China has set a national carbon-neutral goal and the government is piling pressure on industries to comply. As the world’s second largest cosmetics market, valued at US$80 billion, emissions cut for China will have a global impact. The only issue will be persuading budget-conscious shoppers that environmental credentials are worth paying for. Janet Neo, L’Oréal’s Chief Sustainability Officer for North Asia and China, told the South China Morning Post, “The Chinese e-commerce market has high penetration, big volume and huge market size. It presents a real opportunity in the sense that if we can promote the right behaviours, then lasting change could be just around the corner.”
