THE WHAT? Tencent is set to open up WeChat Pay to foreign visitors to China this month. Tourists will be able to link any card issued by Visa to the popular payment app and use it to pay for goods in mainland China, according to a report published by Reuters.
THE DETAILS Plans forged pre-pandemic to link up with international card providers have resurfaced as China’s borders reopened earlier this year, Reuters reveals.
“Our efforts to further open payment services to visitors coincide with the full resumption of travel and tourism to China, as well as the major upcoming international events scheduled in the country this year,” Tencent said in a statement, per Reuters.
THE WHY? The move follows rival Ant’s announcement that Mastercard holders could now access Alipay. As mobile payment has become the dominant payment method across China, tourists have struggled to access goods and services.
